Muhammad Dawjee

SpecialityArtist

Muhammad Dawjee is a Johannesburg-based artist exploring the intersections of sound, space, and music. Born in Laudium, a racially segregated indian* area under apartheid, his work grapples with the layered identities of South African black communities and histories of colonialism, migration, and resistance. As saxophonist and composer, he co-founded the Indo-jazz trio Kinsmen, performed with iPhupho L’ka Biko, and toured internationally with The Brother Moves On. From 2019 to 2021, Dawjee was a tutor for Unit 19: The Act of Service at the University of Johannesburg’s Graduate School of Architecture, focusing on the ideological and spatial legacies of apartheid. Since 2022, he has been exploring rivers and water as vibratory archives of memory. His sound installation spectres of //khamis sa: a listening well was featured in Oscillations – Cape Town-Berlin at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. He is currently an Artist in Residence at UJ’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, developing a speculative architectural project considering the sonic landscape of Johannesburg and its relationships with South African jazz.
