Dr Jan Hugo
Jan Hugo is a registered architect and senior lecturer in the Architecture Department at the University of Pretoria. He completed his PhD focusing on the climate change adaptation potential of building-integrated agriculture. His current research focus is on the role of the built environment in developing climate change resilient cities, specifically focused on heat health solutions. Jan Hugo currently coordinates the Professional Master’s in Architecture programme at UP and participates in the Regenerative and Resilient Cities research group, the International CIB Smart and Sustainable Built Environments Working group, and the Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience Task Group. Jan Hugo has contributed to a number of inter- and transdisciplinary research projects focused on climate resilience in marginalised communities and has been the recipient of the CIB Vista Young Researchers Award in 2023 and the UP Exceptional Young Researcher Award in 2025. Jan Hugo is a fellow of the UP/ Innovative Africa Transdisciplinary Young Research Leadership Programme.
