Bongisa Msutu
I am a black woman, and a community- and collaboration-driven designer, design educator and researcher. I’ve worked as an architectural lighting designer for +/-15 years, working on both local and international projects ranging from cultural institutions, hospitality and residential typologies. Armed with an undergrad in Interior Architecture (UP), a postgrad in Anthropology (UNISA) and then an MA in Heritage (Wits) – both located in architecture and spatial practice – I have taught spatial design part-time for 7 years at a number of institutions, including the University of Pretoria and University of Johannesburg – at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
My design and research focus is on the spatial imaginaries (and materialities) of black and marginalised people and communities. My interest and awareness of socio-cultural and political contexts influence the way I design, teach and conduct research.
Currently, I am an Interior Design lecturer at the Greenside Design Center (GDC).
