Boitumelo Mazibuko
Boitumelo is a Johannesburg-based content manager, visual artist, curator, photographer, and a master’s candidate at the University of Johannesburg. Her creative and academic work explores the intersections of memory, identity, and displacement in contemporary South Africa.
At the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA), University of Johannesburg, Boitumelo curates and manages architectural student exhibitions, including the GSA’s annual Summer Show, as well as internal and public lecture series. She leads a team of content creators, overseeing the school’s visual identity and communication strategies. In 2023, she participated in a professional exchange with several postgraduate architectural institutions in the United Kingdom, engaging with curators and creative leads from schools such as The Bartlett and the Architectural Association School of Architecture.
Her master’s thesis investigates the impact of apartheid-era exile and displacement on familial identity through the lens of her own family’s history. Using archival photography, official documentation, film, painting, and mixed media, her research traces shifts in family dynamics over time. The work reflects on the fragmentation and loss caused by forced migration, while also reconstructing personal and collective memory in pursuit of healing.
Boitumelo curated the exhibition Love Before Exile at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, where she invited viewers into an intimate dialogue about reclaiming narrative agency. The exhibition served as both a personal archive and a public reflection on how families across South Africa continue to grapple with the legacy of forced separation. Her work contributes to broader conversations on memory, erasure, and identity in post-apartheid society.
