Avela Swana
Avela Swana is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary creative with a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. Passionate about the dynamic evolution of her city, she works at the intersection of design, art, and storytelling to shape spaces that empower communities. Her diverse practice includes curation, graphic design, writing, and independent art, with contributions as a freelance designer and editor for organisations, entrepreneurs, and local artists.
Avela has written articles for platforms such as GIfA and hosted architectural discussions for YPF, fostering dialogue around urban development and creative placemaking. Currently interning with PaperCut Studios, she is part of the team bringing the AZA Conference to life—an extension of her commitment to reimagining spaces that help people craft better stories of themselves. Through her work, she strives to contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s cultural and built environment, one project at a time.
